Today’s Bread ~ Why, God?

1 Peter 1:7 – These trials are only to test your faith, to show that it is strong and pure.  It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold – and your faith is far more precious to God than mere gold.  So if your faith remains strong after being tried by fiery trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.

I owe my love of running to my dad.

My dad is an accomplished marathoner, boasting 10 completed 26.3 mile races.  Of course, he’s now boasting two shiny new hips because of it, but that’s another story for another time.

As a little girl, my parents would take me and my sisters to the high school track and “let” us run around it if we were well-behaved (brilliant parenting, by the way).  My sisters carried on the family tradition, joining track as soon as they could, but I allowed my love of theater to override my penchant for running, and fell away during my tween and early teen years.

As a senior in high school, I was overweight, suffering from low (read “no”) self-esteem, flirting with an eating disorder, and miserable.  My father, growing tired of the complaining, threw down a mandate: Run track or be grounded for the rest of your senior year (a missing tidbit of info is that this mandate came on the heels of getting caught, drunk, on school grounds).  I chose track.

It was a decision that changed the course of my life.

I can clearly remember the first day.  Our coach, Mr. Liese, made each of us run a timed mile.  At the start of the season, a good time would be six minutes.  A great time would be five-and-a-half.  I ran it in a shade over eight minutes; 8:04, to be exact, and I thought I was dying.

On more than one occasion, I recall Mr. Liese really laying into me.  He never went easy on me, even though there were many, many other runners far more worthy of his attention and efforts.  As we moved into the fourth and final quarter of the year, he encouraged me to sign up for his strength and conditioning class, promising the workouts would improve my running.  What does he care, I wondered, I’m getting ready to graduate.  But, under his less-than-gentle prodding, I took the class.

I came to respect the executor of my torture, realizing that the old me had to be broken down if the new me were to emerge.  I started to push myself harder.  If he said, “Run five miles this weekend,” I ran seven.  I altered my diet and streamlined my lifestyle, and at the regional track meet, the state meet qualifier, I saw the fruit of my efforts.
